Mexico City Trip 2021

I love to take time off the last week of the year to give myself a break and a fresh start to the new year. I am crazy busy with work at the beginning of the year so it is nice to have that small break before it all starts back up.  We have taken trips during this time on several occasions and always have a blast so when we saw a deal we couldn't pass it up to Mexico City my husband and I booked it right away. Other than purchasing the hotel and plane tickets I can take no other credit for the excursions or restaurant reservations, my husband planned all of it and did an amazing job. I will do a small breakdown of our travel itinerary; we arrived on a Monday and left on a Saturday so had six days (really five when you exclude travel times) to explore the city. We did a lot of tourist things, but I am glad we did them and would recommend these tours and excursions especially if it is your first time visiting. #ashleyryantravels

Getting around I felt very safe and we did Uber to get around or were provided transportation on the excursions. It was recommended to Uber instead of rent a car and when we got there I understood why. The streets are majority one way, some very narrow, the drivers honk a lot and drive fast, and there are a lot of round-abouts, but with lights so it is very confusing. When booking an Uber if they had a ton of previous rides you know you are pretty safe. Some of our Uber drivers have had over 100,000 rides and it was very cheap.

Side note we did constantly monitor the COVID restrictions and requirements and we took all the necessary test and precautions before, during, and after traveling. To get back into the United Stated you have to take a COVID test within 24 hours of returning and if negative you can proceed with your travel plans. Also we brought an at home COVID test to constantly monitor before and during the trip. Majority of the population wore mask (even two) and almost all places took your temperature and gave you hand sanitizer.

With a brief notes of safety and health mentioned above here is a brief look at our 6 day itinerary:
Day 1
- Arrived around 3 pm
- Checked in hotel (we stayed in a cute area with lots of restaurants, shops, and close to the The Angel of Independence Statue)
- Walked around exploring
-Ate and drank close to the hotel
Day 2
-We woke up very early (6:30 am pick up) for our first excursion a tour of the Teotihuacan Pyramids
-My husband booked it through Viator I am not too familiar with this website, but there are a ton of tour options all with different companies
-We got to the pyramids early so we were some of the first people there and we started by the Moon pyramid and worked our way back. I am glad we got to do the tour this way because you walked down hill and had less crowds. You are not allowed to climb the main (moon and sun pyramids), but there is a smaller one you can climb by the main entrance
-After touring the pyramids, we stopped and had lunch and a Tequila and Mezcal tasting
-We got back to the hotel around 4 pm
~We went to a cute book store
-We went to a Lucha Libre wrestling match that started at 7:30 pm and ended at 9:30 pm, four matches in totally and it was fun and packed
-Grabbed tacos at a popular joint
-Back at the hotel around 12 am
Day 3
-Woke up and had our second tour that started around 10:30 am - Walking Food tour around Mexico City. They recommend not to have breakfast and I am glad we didn't because we ate so much, but thank goodness we walked a lot
-This was Amos and my favorite tour. It was booked through Club Tengo Hambre, we highly recommended them
-The tour was a small group which I loved, you had walked to about six different taco stands that all had something unique and different from the others. We did not have a single taco that was the same at any of the stands
-They also took you through local markets and did tastings of Mezcal and other unique foods special to Mexico
- We finished right before 3 pm
-We took an Uber straight to the National Museum of Anthropologie. (The hours of operation are 10 am - 5 pm)
- We didn't have too long, but we toured the whole thing right up until closing.
-Headed back to our hotel
-We had reservations at Hanky Panky Cocktail Bar, a top 50 best bar in the world, a speak easy bar, really cool atmosphere. They have small snack foods and fancy drinks.
-We didn't eat dinner that night because I think we were still stuffed from the food tour
Day 4
-We woke up for our last tour, which started around 9 am, the Xochimilco, Coyoacan, and Frida Kahlo Museum Tour. This tour was a full day and ended around 5:30 pm
-We went to Coyoacan to do a small walking tour and to taste some of their cuisine.
-Then we went around the university to look at several famous murals
-Went to Xochimilco for an hour boat ride with food and drinks
-After Xochimilco went back to Coyoacan to tour the Frida Kahlo Museum, the home where she lived and grew up. It was a beautiful home and a highlight of the trip for me.
-We had reservations another speak easy, Handshake, that was also rated among the top 50 bars in the world. The drinks were amazing here, no food, but good atmosphere.
-We then went to a late dinner reservation to Ticuchi a well know restaurant. We did have reservations at Pujol on Tuesday, but they called and cancelled on us due to their staff contracting COVID. We were saddened, but Ticuchi made up for it and were even told by locals they preferred this place to Pujol.
Day 5
-We took it easy on our last day since the last four days were very long and busy days.
-At 10 am we had COVID test conducted at our hotel for entry back into the states, both were negative.
-We walked around, went to a huge market (spend hours there), more book stores, had more tacos, and drinks.
-We spent a quite evening to ourselves to celebrate the new year and loved that it was just us while listening to the fireworks and shots of the locals.
Day 6
-We checked out of our hotel and headed to the airport around 10:30 am to make sure that all our documents and everything was in order to leave the country.
-Arrived at our home around 8 pm safe and sound

I loved our time there and would definitely go back just for the food and markets. We would definitely go at a slower place and explore more surrounding towns. We would love to visit Oaxaca, another great food town supposedly with great authentic food to old customs and cultures. Below are pictures from our time there and hope you enjoy them and get inspired to visit yourself.
