Mardi Gras in New Orleans 2024

This year our family attended Mardi Gras in New Orleans for the first time and it did not disappoint. I was a little skeptical at first because as an adult you only hear about the wild and crazy Mardi Gras experience. Our experience was far from that; very family friendly and enjoyable. We did have the royal treatment in that we went with close family friends who are from New Orleans and go every year so they know the ropes really well. That being said we stayed in Uptown a few blocks to all the parades we went to listed below. This was key because we had little children with us so having a bathroom within walking distance was so nice. Our friends also have family/friends still in the area so we were able to experience some of the festivities kid free and other unique events; like a block party with a brass band and a disco denim contest.

I was not expecting the parades to be so elaborate and beautiful. The amount of time and effort that goes into each parade is so stunning. I also learned that each parade has a "theme"; such as Krewe of Muses is an all women's parade that throw unique and one of a kind decorated high heel shoes (getting one is very rare and special) or like Krewe of Tucks throw toilet paper and decorated plungers (definitely a fun and laid back Krewe). Yes I was surprised to find that each parade throw more than just beads (even though this was the main throwing item); they through a ton of toys, stuff animals, flowers, light up swords, athletic balls, Frisbees, clothing items, bags, etc.. My two favorite parades were Krewe of Muses and Krewe of Bacchus. Bacchus is one of the biggest parades and all the floats seem over the top and the swag they throw is unbelievable.

My kid is already asking if we are going back again next year; he hit the jack pot with five garbage bags filled will stuff thrown from all the parades we attended (his favorite being all the toy swords).

The parades we attended were:
Thursday:
- Krewe of Muses
Friday:
- Krewe of Hermes
- Krewe of d'Etat
- Krewe of Morpheus
Saturday:
- Krewe of Tucks
Sunday:
- Krewe of Okeanos
- Krewe of Mid-City
- Krewe of Thoth
- Krewe of Baccchus
